cPanel Hosting Explained

For your info, it's useful to know that the majority of the cPanel web hosting offers on today's web hosting market are generated by a quite insignificant marketing segment (when it comes to annual capital flow) called hosting reseller. Reseller web hosting is a sort of a small-scale marketing niche, which generates a huge number of different web hosting trademarks, yet furnishing precisely the same services: mostly cPanel web hosting services. This is bad news for everyone. Why? Because at least 98% of the website hosting offerings on the entire web hosting marketplace furnish literally the same service: cPanel. There's no variety at all. Even the cPanel-based web hosting price tags are alike. Very similar. Giving those who demand a top web hosting service virtually no other web hosting platform/web hosting CP choice. So, there is just a single fact: out of more than 200,000 website hosting brands in the world, the non-cPanel based ones are less than 2%! Less than two percent, note that one...

200,000 "web hosting providers", all cPanel-based, yet uniquely labeled

The web hosting "variety" and the web hosting "offerings" Google presents to all of us boil down to just one and the same thing: cPanel. Under 100's of 1000's of different website hosting trademarked names. Assume you are only a regular chap who's not very familiar with (as the majority of us) with the web page creation processes and the hosting platforms, which in fact power the respective domains and web portals. Are you prepared to make your hosting decision? Is there any website hosting alternative you can select? Of course there is, nowadays there are more than two hundred thousand web hosting service providers out there. Officially. Then where is the problem? Here's where: more than ninety eight percent of these more than two hundred thousand unique website hosting brands around the world will give you absolutely the same cPanel hosting Control Panel and platform, named differently, with strictly the same price tags! WOW! That's how immense the assortment on the current web hosting market is... Period.

The web hosting LOTTERY we are all participating in

Simple arithmetic shows that to encounter a non-cPanel based web hosting service provider is a colossal stroke of fortune. There is a less than 1 in 50 chance that a phenomenon like that will happen! Less than 1 in 50...

The positive and negative sides of the cPanel web hosting solution

Let's not be fierce with cPanel. At least, in the years 2001-2004 cPanel was trendy and presumably covered most website hosting industry requirements. To cut a long story short, cPanel can do the job for you if you have only one single domain name to host. But, if you have more domains...

Weak Side Number 1: An idiotic domain folder structure

If you have 2 or more domains, however, be extremely cautious not to delete entirely the add-on ones (that's how cPanel will refer to each subsequent hosted domain, which is not the default one: an add-on domain). The files of the add-on domain names are very simple to delete on the hosting server, since they all are located into the root folder of the default domain, which is the very popular public_html folder. Each add-on domain name is a folder located inside the folder of the default domain name. Like a sub-folder. Next time attempt not to erase the files of the add-on domains, please. Decide for yourself how wonderful cPanel's domain name folder arrangement is:

public_html (here my-default-domain.com is placed)
public_html/my-family (a folder part of my-default-domain.com)
public_html/my-second-domain.com (an add-on domain)
public_html/my-second-wife (a folder part of my-default-domain.com)
public_html/my-second-wife.net (an add-on domain name)
public_html/my-third-domain.com (an add-on domain)
public_html/my-third-wife (a folder part of my-default-domain.com)
public_html/my-third-wife.net (an add-on domain)
public_html/rebeka (a folder part of my-default-domain.com)
public_html/rebeka.my-third-wife.net (a sub-domain of an add-on domain name)

Are you growing perplexed? We undoubtedly are!

Negative Side Number Two: The same electronic mail folder arrangement

The electronic mail folder structure on the web server is absolutely the same as that of the domain names... Repeating the very same error twice?!? The admin guys strongly reinforce their belief in God when coping with the mail folders on the e-mail server, hoping not to mess things up too harshly.

Weak Side Number Three: A sheer deficiency of domain name management GUIs

Do we need to mention the utter absence of a contemporary domain manipulation user interface - a place where you can: register/move/renew/park or administer domains, modify domain names' Whois details, shield the Whois info, edit/set up nameservers (DNS) and Domain Name System records? cPanel does not furnish such a "contemporary" section at all. That's an enormous weakness. An unjustifiable one, we want to point out...

Downside Number Four: Many login places (minimum 2, max 3)

What about the need for another login to use the invoicing transaction, domain name and tech support management section? That's apart from the cPanel user account login credentials you've been already given by the cPanel web hosting provider. Now and then, depending on the invoicing system (particularly conceived for cPanel solely) the cPanel web hosting vendor is availing of, the enthusiastic users can end up with two additional login locations (1: the invoicing/domain name administration system; 2: the trouble ticket support platform), winding up with an aggregate of 3 user login locations (counting cPanel).

Weak Side Number 5: 120+ web hosting CP areas to learn... briskly

cPanel presents for your consideration more than one hundred and twenty menus inside the website hosting Control Panel. It's a glorious idea to become acquainted with each of them. And you'd better grasp them fast... That's excessively insolent on cPanel's side.

With all due appreciation, we have a rhetorical question for all cPanel-based web hosting suppliers:

As far as we know, it's not the year 2001, is it? Note that one too...
